What You Actually Need to Know About Due Dates

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

If you're pregnant or planning to be, chances are you've been exposed to the concept of a 'due date'. This single day, highlighted with anticipation on the calendar, can often induce stress and unrealistic expectations. As a seasoned doula and hypnobirthing teacher, I'd love to demystify this concept and offer a fresh perspective.

"Estimated due dates are just that: Estimates. They are not appointments. They aren’t use by, sell by, or best before dates. And 95% of babies are not born on their due date"

- Dr Sara Wickham

The typical human pregnancy is about 40 weeks. This timescale is based on the last menstrual period, or LMP, and is used globally by healthcare professionals. However, it's crucial to understand that this method is far from an exact science. In fact, only about 5% of mothers actually give birth on their specified due date.

Rather than fixating on a precise date, I advocate a 'due month' approach. This offers a range of roughly four weeks in which your baby may decide to arrive. This perspective is not only more accurate but also aligns with the hypnobirthing philosophy. It emphasises trust in the natural process, decreases anxiety around a single day, and encourages the parents-to-be to be patient and allow the baby to take the lead.

While awaiting the arrival of your little one, your job is to stay healthy and relaxed. Trust your body and your baby. Engage in activities that make you feel good, stay active, and maintain a healthy diet. Remember, your emotional wellbeing is just as important as your physical health. Let go of the stress of a set due date and instead, embrace the flexibility of your due month.

In conclusion I invite you to reconsider the concept of 'due dates' in pregnancy. Instead, consider the 'due month' approach. This perspective can create a more relaxed, positive, and empowering experience for expectant mothers. After all, every pregnancy is unique, and your little one knows best when it's time to say hello to the world!

Remember, the greatest gift you can give your baby is a calm and confident mother ready to embrace the beautiful journey of childbirth.

If you feel that you require additional support to prepare for your baby's birth, I can create a bespoke doula package to include hypnobirthing, private yoga sessions and of course, I can be by your side when you birth your baby, ensuring you feel comfortable, prepared and at ease.
